When you’re new to SEO there is a lot to
learn. There are a seemingly endless number of factors that influence your
search rankings. With that in mind it’s often difficult for those that are new
to the field to know where to start. Maybe you’re not even looking to make a
career of digital marketing and SEO, and rather you just want to improve your
own website. In either case starting by auditing your websites SEO is the place
to start.
When you’re new to SEO there is a lot to learn. There are a seemingly endless number of factors that influence your search rankings. With that in mind it’s often difficult for those that are new to the field to know where to start. Maybe you’re not even looking to make a career of digital marketing and SEO, and rather you just want to improve your own website. In either case starting by auditing your websites SEO is the place to start.
There are many tools out there claiming to
be a one stop shop, capable of single handedly satisfying your SEO audit needs.
Most offer a paid version of the program, mainly catering to professionals and
businesses. Today I’m going to provide you with the best of the free audit tools. As with anything in life, a lot of this comes down to preference.
However, in my experience running your site through just one of these tools
won’t suffice. Often running your site through multiple tools gives you
differing results, highlighting varying areas for improvement on your site.
This will give you the best blueprint for maximizing your websites SEO.
I’ve tried to curate a list that offers free
solutions, most offer a paid service as well, but the tools included in this
list have some form of free version that is adequate, often the paid version
will offer the ability to analyze more sites, but produces the same report as
in the free version.
Without further ado, here’s my list of the Top 5 SEO Audit Tools.
1. SEOptimer
Without question this is my first stop when
I’m asked to examine a website for SEO. Providing fast and clear analysis is
the key to what makes SEOptimer number
one. Results are broken down into categories: SEO, Usability, Performance,
Social, and Security. Each is given a letter grade. The readability of this
report stands out above the rest. Within seconds I receive an overview, and
when I want to examine the results further, I simply use the tabs at the top to
jump to the specific section I’m looking for.
The recommendations sections give you a clear list of actionable solutions, each with a priority rating. This will provide individuals with less SEO experience a good guide of how to spend their time.
2. SEOTESTER ONLINE
I’ll start with this; it’s hard to find something SEO Tester Online is missing. I think it’s fantastic. This is number 2 on my list for a reason. As I mentioned previously, some of this will come down to preference, but I’ll put it this way, I won’t be surprised to hear that many believe that this is the real number 1 on my list. The site breaks down your websites analysis into the following sections: Overview, Basic, Content, Speed, and Social. Each subsection within the main headers provides a score out of 100. This gives users very clear indications of problem areas. The biggest flaw this tool has is that it doesn’t aggregate the recommendations anywhere, which makes it a bit more difficult to review all of your websites problems and compare them to results found using other tools. Overall though, I really enjoy my experience with this tool.
3. UpCity- Free SEO Report Card
I also highly recommend this tool. UpCity provides a quality report that is thorough, clean, and organized. I particularly like the feature where you can easily analyze and compare your competitor’s site. If you’re working on a site for a client, or potential client, this can be a great selling feature. No business wants to see that their competitor’s site is consistently ranking better than their own. The reports are divided into the following sections: Report Summary, Rank Analysis, Link Building, On-Site Analysis, Website Accessibility, Trust Metrics, and Current Indexing. I highly recommend you use this tool as one of your first stops when analyzing the SEO value of any website.
4. SEO Site Checkup
To reiterate, much of this review is based on personal preference. I’m not a big fan of the format of the final report provided here. However, the report is thorough, with great analysis. That’s why it’s included here. This very well could be the tool that most suits your eye. The SEO Site Checkup report breaks down results into the following sections: Overview, General SEO, Speed, Server & Security, Mobile Usability, and Advanced SEO. The information is all there, but for those of you with less experience I think you’ll find some of the details to be above your head, and the lack of a structure will leave you unsure where to start on your site’s improvement.
5. Woorank
Woorank provides users with a fairly comprehensive report on a website’s SEO condition. Once again I consider the analysis to be good, but the layout leaving much to be desired. The report forces you to scroll through to see each section, and doesn’t give each section an individual grade. Frustrating as this may be, the tool does deserve recognition for its thoroughness, providing a section relating to visitor/ traffic details. I recommend using this tool after running your site through SEOptimer for best results.
My Conclusion
Now that you have my list, it’s important to remember a few things. First, blindly following the recommendations of all these tools isn’t recommended. They should only be used as guides. They don’t know your company or website like you do, and as such they may recommend things that simply make no sense for your business or UX (User Experience). Second, run your site through at least two of the SEO tools outlined. They differ on what importance they give to various aspects of your website, and what they find tends to differ slightly. Finally, use these tools to improve your SEO skills, take your own SEO inventory prior to an online analysis. Also take note of the issues that are commonly coming up on each website you submit for analysis. To really improve your SEO skills, you need to be a lifelong learner.
