Becoming a Father Has Made Zuckerberg Yearn for a Better World
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have been great philanthropists and community builders for a while now. Yet, their efforts seem to have risen to a new level with the birth of their first child, Max. Parenthood seems to have given them a deeper sense of social responsibility — they are committed to making the world a better place for Max and the future generations to come. Zuckerberg’s wife, Pricilla Chan explains: “We want her to have the benefits of an entire generation that is able to take advantage of all that we are able to create.” What Chan is referring to is that planting seeds now as individuals will grant us a flourishing legacy as a society in the future. We are speaking of sizable and significant areas that need improvement in today’s world so thus these changes will not occur over night; but over time with the appropriate effort and commitment.
In terms of the types of improvements they will focus on, they are committed to planting seeds in multiple essential sectors of the world ranging from education and science to health and community building.

With the birth of their daughter, Zuckerberg published a letter on Facebook addressed to his newborn daughter, Max. The letter solidifies their plans for the future generation on social media, expressing a greater commitment not only to Max but to the whole world. In fact, when posting this letter on social media, Mark thanks people for the love and support and for joining him in his hopes for Max’s future. This portrays Max as a symbol of a positive future. The initiative brings these hopeful plans into action. Mark and Priscilla are committing to donating 99% of their Facebook shares over their lifetime through the Chan Zuckerberg initiative. The initiatives’ focus areas are personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities – which have already been invested in for the past 5 years.
Social Media Extends Zuckerbergs’ Social Responsibility to the World
With Max’s birth, coming forward on social media by publicizing their philanthropic activity ratifies their long term commitment to bettering the world. This allows social media users to keep up with their progress and investments. Most importantly, publicizing the Chan Zuckerberg initiative also places a weight on the shoulders of other powerful people around the globe. Ultimately, Mark and Priscilla are setting a great example for others.
